From August 19th to November 17th, Wichita State University will display a special exhibit commemorating the Apollo 9 and 11 missions. Titled “Lowell Nesbitt: Apollo, 1969,” the exhibit is based on the artist’s time at Cape Canaveral (then known as Cape Kennedy). Nesbitt was commissioned by the NASA Art Program and created a series of prints depicting an astronaut being suited up, the launching of the Saturn V rocket, the lunar module, and other key images that capture the importance of the missions. Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers says the exhibit taps into the ongoing excitement of the moon landing fifty years later.  “The organizers of NASA’s art program gave the artists high level access about everything going on so they could visualize and shape for the public the stories of early spaceflight,” Brothers said. “Nesbitt’s prints do just that, capturing the excitement and anticipation of new discoveries with accents of reflectivity and light.” The exhibit will take place at the John Bardo Center and was made possible through Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum of Art.
