The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working with Coffeyville police to look into the death of a man who drowned in the Verdigris River after a chase with officers.

Police said an all-terrain vehicle had been stolen from the Montgomery County Fair Thursday night, August 15th, and the ATV was seen the next night going south on U.S. Highway 169 toward the Oklahoma border.   A Coffeyville officer began chasing the SUV at a distance, and the vehicle went into a field toward the Verdigris River.  The officer found that the ATV had crashed into a tree, and the rider was struggling in the river.

Emergency crews worked to rescue the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.  An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.

The man was a white male in his 20s, but his name has not been released.
