A former Wichita Eagle reporter and Managing Editor of the Hutchinson News newspaper has been named Magistrate of Kingman County.
Ron Sylvester spent 12 years with the Wichita Eagle until his departure in 2012. He went on to report for the Las Vegas Sun, Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Register before returning to Kansas as Managing Editor of the Hutchinson News.
A nomination commission voted for Sylvester Monday. A magistrate typically oversees traffic and misdemeanor cases, as well as preliminary hearings and some civil cases.
State law does not require magistrates to be attorneys, but Sylvester will have to pass an exam in order to continue as magistrate.
