A standoff at a Wichita home in the 1100 block of North Amidon ended early Wednesday, when police determined a man’s actions didn’t warrant the response.
Officers had been called to check on a 52-year-old man going through what was described as a mental health crisis. Police first checked on the man around 5:15 Tuesday afternoon and found he had a handgun but his actions had not constituted a felony crime.
Family called police again around 9:45 Tuesday night saying the man was threatening to damage property. Because of the earlier call about the man police responded with a SWAT team and negotiators. After several hours of trying to get the man to exit his home a prosecutor determined the man’s action were still not enough to rise to the level of felony. The SWAT response was called off.
Police say they are working with the 52-year-old man and his family to get whatever help is needed. Officers have been called to this man’s home in the past.
