Petitions circulating against parole for man convicted in Wichita girl’s murder

Petitions are circulating in Wichita against parole for a man convicted for his role in the kidnapping and murder of a nine-year-old girl.

56-year-old Donald Wacker is being held in the Larned Correctional Facility, and he is scheduled for a parole hearing in Derby on October 16th.  Wacker was convicted of helping Doil Lane in the July, 1990 kidnapping and murder of Nancy Shoemaker.    Lane later confessed to the murder and he is in prison in Texas, serving a life sentence for the murder of an 8-year-old girl in 1980.

Grace Baptist Church pastor Mike O’Donnell, his wife Peggy and son Michael O’Donnell spoke at Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell’s weekly news conference at city hall on Thursday. They are urging support from the community with a petition drive to deny parole for Wacker.

Pastor O’Donnell said it has been heartbreaking for Nancy’s parents, Bo and Julie Shoemaker, to go through the parole process every two years.   He said they want to make sure that Wacker does not return to the Wichita community, and that’s not from a desire for vengeance but it’s for the safety of the community.   The Shoemakers now live in Florida, and they are former members of Grace Baptist Church.

A Nancy Shoemaker page has been set up on Facebook with more information on the drive, and petitions are also available at Grace Baptist Church.
