Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy veteran Tom Zurhellen. Tom is doing what other’s have done but he’s giving something up in return other than his time. Tom is walking 22 miles a day across the U.S. to raise awareness about veteran homelessness and suicide. Tom was going to use his sabbatical from being an English teacher at Marist College to write a novel, instead he set out on this journey. He said once he really learned how much support veterans needed, even in his home town, it was an easy choice. He admitted at times he thought about giving up because of the pain but once he thought about the pain those veterans are going through, it kept him going. Thank you Tom for your determination and your service.
