Star Spangled Salute: A 75 Year Bronze Star Journey

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 95-year old veteran Army tank gunner Clarence Smoyer.  Almost 75 years ago Clarence was part of a crew that helped take Cologne, Germany from the Nazis, an important win for the allies.  Recently Clarence was awarded his long over due Bronze Star along with crew members Homer Davis, a bow gunner, William McVey who was a driver, and loader John DeRiggi — all part of the Eagle 7 tank crew — recognized posthumously with Bronze Star medals that their families accepted on their behalf.  Tank commander Bob Earley had previously received the Bronze Star for his actions. To all the members of Eagle 7 tank crew, thank you for your bravery and your service.
