Wichita woman killed in crash near Cheney

The Kansas Highway Patrol said a Wichita woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash near Cheney early Monday morning.

A van and an SUV collided head-on around 8:30 a.m. on Highway 54 just west of 343rd Street West.  The KHP said the van was going east and swerved left to avoid stopped traffic, and it went through the median and struck the SUV head-on.

The driver of the SUV, 30-year-old Mendi Kathleen Cotter of Wichita, was killed in the crash.

A 36-year-old man from Pretty Prairie was driving the van and he had serious injuries.  A passenger, a 17-year-old boy from Pretty Prairie, had minor injuries.

Several accidents on Highway 54 forced the closing of the highway throughout the morning and it was reopened to traffic in the afternoon.   Heavy fog is believed to have been a factor in the crashes between Cheney and Garden Plain.
