A detention deputy at the Sedgwick County jail has been accused of taking an item from a Wichita golf course and taking money from the home of another deputy.

23-year-old Alexander Whiteman was arrested after information was presented to the district attorney’s office for theft charges to be filed.   Whiteman has worked for the jail for a little over two years.

Sheriff Jeff Easter said Whiteman was arrested after a range finder was taken from the pro shop at the Hidden Lakes Golf Course on September 5th.   Easter said a deputy recognized the detention deputy on a surveillance video.    In addition, there was a reported theft of cash from the home of another detention deputy, a friend of Whiteman’s, on the same day.

Easter said in addition to the criminal case, there is an internal affairs investigation in the sheriff’s office.   Whiteman has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.  He had been on leave since September 5th, and he was arrested Friday.

Easter said this is conduct that will not be tolerated in the sheriff’s office.
