Investigation completed into K-9 officer’s death in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has completed an investigation into the death of one of its K-9 officers.  A Labrador retriever named Tibbie was left in a Wildlife and Parks law enforcement vehicle on August 6th after her game warden handler left the vehicle to check on a situation.

The department said the vehicle stalled, disabling the air conditioning system and causing the cab temperature to rise to dangerous levels.   The game warden returned and gave the dog emergency treatment, but she died later at the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University.

The law enforcement vehicles are equipped with a heat-alarm system designed to lower the windows and turn on fans if the engine stalls.  An examination of the vehicle found that the alarm system was not engaged during the time of the incident.

The Wildlife and Parks law enforcement division is checking all vehicles that have a K-9 officer and there will be changes in procedures with officer training to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.
