Wichita attorney sentenced to prison for embezzlement from elderly client

A Wichita attorney has been sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling nearly $1 million from a elderly client who suffers from dementia.

Attorney Larry Toomey spent more over $961,000 from the 103-year-old woman’s bank accounts over a span of 7 years.  He admitted in court that he is a compulsive gambler and that at least half of the money went to support his habit.

He insisted that some of the money was a gift from the woman.  During his sentencing hearing, family of the woman testified that Toomey still visits his victim.

Toomey claims that the woman does not remember her family, but still remembers him.  A Sedgwick County district court Judge sentenced Toomey to 26 months in prison and ordered him to no longer contact the woman.
