A vigilant citizen called Wichita police to report a kidnapping which led to an arrest Monday night.

The call came in around 6:20 p.m., near 2nd and Volutsia. Someone saw a girl being kidnapped by a man with a knife. It turned out the girl had been walking to a nearby Dillons and was approached by the suspect for the first time. The girl left without incident but was taken as she headed back home.

Officers found the teens phone and got security video from the area, which gave them a license plate number. Police found the suspect’s car and as they approached the 15-year-old jumped out of the car and ran to officers. The car was moving slowly and the girl was not hurt. The suspect got away but he was found and arrested shortly after.

The 58-year-old man was booked for multiple charges including kidnapping and rape. He also had an arrest order from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Records show this suspect is a registered offender and was convicted of rape of a 14-year-old girl in 2003. He had been on parole since 2018.

Police are thanking the person who made the 911 call that led officers to the area. Without that call, this case may have ended differently and police say this is a perfect example of see something say something.
