Since 1988, December 1st has been recognized as World AIDS Day.
On Monday, the Sedgwick County Health Department will again be providing free testing for HIV and and Syphilis. The testing will be available from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., but the department will be closed for lunch during the noon hour.
You can call (316) 660-7300 to make an appointment, but walk-ins will be welcome. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports there were 3,047 people living with HIV, 836 of those in Sedgwick County.
Many do not know they are infected with the virus, which makes testing critical. The Center for Disease Control recommends that anyone who is sexually active, shares needles, or is in contact with blood or blood products to get tested.
