By the Associated Press:

The Justice Department’s internal watchdog has found that the FBI was justified in opening its investigation into ties between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

The findings in the highly anticipated report undercut President Donald Trump’s claim that he has merely been the target of a “witch hunt.” The inspector general’s report on Monday does identify “serious performance failures” up the bureau’s chain of command. But it rules out political bias in the decision to investigate Trump’s campaign.

Trump’s attorney general, William Barr, quickly rejected the main conclusions by his inspector general, who was in place when Barr was appointed by the president..

FBI Director Chris Wray says the problems found by the Justice Department watchdog examining the origins of the Russia probe are “unacceptable.” He told The Associated Press on Monday that they are “unrepresentative of who we are as an institution.”

His comments came after the watchdog found that the FBI was justified in opening its investigation and did not act with political bias, but there were “serious performance failures” up the bureau’s chain of command.
