For over 60 years now, NORAD has tracked Santa Claus as he makes his deliveries every Christmas Eve.
It started in 1955, when a local Sears store misprinted Santa’s telephone number. When a child called the number, it ended up going straight to the Commander-in-Chief at the Continental Air Defense Command, which eventually became NORAD.
Not wanting to disappoint the child who called Colonel Harry Shoup ordered his staff to use their radar to look for Santa. The tradition was born from there and has continued today.
