Grass fires break out across Kansas

Firefighters were battling a number of grass fires across central and south central Kansas.

One fire was reported east of Arkansas City in Cowley County, and people southwest of Dexter were being urged to be ready to take action. The fire was near U.S. Highway 166 and Grouse Creek Road.    Gusty south winds were spreading the fire to the north.   Crews from Derby, Mulvane, Clearwater and other communities were working to get the fire under control.

Another fire was located northwest of Eureka in Greenwood County.    Another grass fire was reported east of Salina in Saline County, and crews were battling a fire near Halstead in Harvey County.

Weather radar from the National Weather Service and our news partners at KWCH was showing smoke from the fires.

A red flag warning is in effect until 9 p.m. because of dry conditions and gusty winds.
