Sedgwick County commissioners had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to officially open a new pedestrian bridge north of Haysville.

The 907-foot-long bridge near 63rd Street North and Meridian provides a walkway over the M.S. “Mitch” Mitchell Floodway, also known as the Big Ditch, and it connects to existing pathways to the north and south.

The $3.2 million bridge is part of an ongoing effort by the county to complete pedestrian pathways and encourage overall walkability.

The new bridge is named for former county commissioner Tim Norton, who took part in Monday’s event.   He represented the county’s second district, which includes Haysville.  The project was completed under a partnership with Sedgwick County, the city of Haysville, and the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.
