Wichita police are investigating the discovery of a body in a burned out car.

Firefighters and police were called around 3:50 a.m., to the 1700 block of south Elpyco, near Harry and Oliver. Someone reported hearing gunshots near Battin and Osie, and arriving officers found the burning car. It’s not clear if there were actually any shots fired or if someone possibly heard popping tires from the burning SUV. This involved a 2002 Ford Expedition.

The body was found after the fire was put out.

Police are in the early stages of their investigation, but at the moment it is believed this was a homicide.

Officers have talked with the owner of the burning car and found that it had not been stolen.

Anyone who knows more about what happened is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
