Retired Wichita adviser sentenced to prison for trust fund theft

A retired financial adviser in Wichita has been sentenced to over three years in prison for taking money from two trust funds belonging to one of his clients.

73-year-old Walter “Bud” Hollis had pleaded guilty to felony theft.   Prosecutors said between 2014 and 2018, Hollis embezzled more than $800,000 from the trust funds for a retired widow who had been his client for several years.

The 75-year-old victim told the judge Tuesday that she trusted Hollis to manage her estate after her husband died.  She said the theft destroyed her sense of security in retirement and denied her children and stepchildren their inheritance.

Judge Jeffrey Syrios gave Hollis a 38-month sentence and ordered him to pay $822,322 to the victim.
