Woman sentenced for dragging deputy during Wichita traffic stop

A woman has been sentenced to over 13 years in prison for an incident last year in which a Sedgwick County deputy was dragged during a traffic stop.

46-year-old Melissa Heinzman had pleaded guilty in January to aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer.   She was arrested several weeks after an incident in June, 2019 when she tried to speed away from a traffic stop at 21st Street North and I-135.    The deputy’s belt got caught in Heinzman’s car as she tried to get away, and the deputy ended up with a broken ankle.

Heinzman was ordered to pay over $33,000 in restitution.
