WSU to cancel in-person classes through the end of the semester

Wichita State University will continue its spring semester classes online or by remote, and it will not resume in-person classes.

The decision was announced by WSU president Jay Golden in a letter to students and faculty late Monday.

Dr. Golden said the decision was based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control for limited gatherings for at least eight weeks.

WSU will begin limiting on-campus housing operations at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 22nd.  Students who have already left campus will not be allowed to return without authorization from Housing & Residence Life staff.   Students who have traveled to certain areas during the extended spring break period will not be allowed to pick up items until they have been through 14 days of quarantine.  This applies to students who have visited California, New York state, Washington state, and the counties of Eagle, Summit, Pitkin and Gunnison in Colorado.

The university is in the process of deciding how to process housing and dining refund requests, and a decision will be announced later on the university’s web site.

Students will be allowed to remain on campus if they meet certain criteria:

International students and students with a permanent address in an area heavily affected by the COVID-19 virus

Students with health conditions or disabilities that prevent them from traveling home

Students who live with a family member or guardian with health issues that put them at risk of COVID-19

Students without the ability to return to their permanent residence due to other documented circumstances

Dr. Golden said he and WSU staff have been consulting with their counterparts at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University, along with other state universities.   He is calling on students and faculty to follow CDC and local health guidelines and stay safe.
