Sedgwick County jail will close lobby to public access

Sedgwick County sheriff Jeff Easter says the county jail will close its lobby to public access starting Monday, March 23rd, and it will be in effect through April 5th in a response to the coronavirus situation.

The sheriff said the changes will not affect patrol activities or emergency responses.  He said inmates will still have access to remote visitation, 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week.   More information on visitation is available at the web site sedgwickcounty.org/sheriff under the detention bureau tab.

Inmates will still have access to attorneys, court staff, and ministers, and citizens can still write letters to inmates.  The letters can be addressed to the inmate at 141 West Elm, Wichita, Kansas 67203.  Guidelines are available on the sheriff’s web page at sedgwickcounty.org

Sheriff Easter said sanitation standards are being maintained at the jail to take care of staff and inmates, and there is a full medical staff on site.  If needed, the jail has a plan to care for and quarantine individuals to minimize exposure to inmates and staff.

Questions and concerns on services and access to the jail can be directed to the detention administration bureau at 316-660-0900, or they can be emailed to jail@sedgwick.gov The phone line and email will be answered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All other sheriff’s office business will be by appointment only.   A list of contact numbers is available on the county’s web site, and on Monday there will be a COVID-19 tab on the sheriff’s page with information on the changes in public access.
