Hearing planned on lawsuit over religious gatherings in Kansas

By the Associated Press and KFDI News:

A federal judge is planning a hearing Thursday on a lawsuit filed by two churches against Kansas governor Laura Kelly’s order limiting the size of religious gatherings and funerals.

U.S. District Judge John Broomes in Wichita has issued a temporary restraining order to block the state from enforcing the ban on the two churches that filed the suit.  The ruling  prevents the enforcement of Kelly’s order against First Baptist Church in Dodge City in western Kansas and Calvary Baptist Church in Junction City in northeast Kansas.  The judge has scheduled a hearing at 9 a.m. Thursday to decide on a longer-term order in the case.

The Christian-founded and conservative Alliance for Defending Freedom, which was involved in the case, said 30 attended the Junction City service and 26 the Dodge City service on Sunday.

The governor has said the order is not about religious freedom, but it’s about health and safety and preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
