Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office reports evidence theft

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating an internal theft at its property and evidence storage site, and two civilian employees were found to be involved.

The investigation began in January, and at this point it has been determined that $145,000 in cash was missing, along with drugs, seven guns, and power tools.  One of the guns has been recovered.     Investigators are still working to identify other evidence that has been stolen.   More than 50,000 pieces of evidence are stored at the site.

A property and evidence technician was suspended in February, and a supervisor was reassigned.  Both civilian employees are no longer with the Sheriff’s Office.  An outside firm has been brought in to help with an audit.

The Sheriff’s Office is also working with the District Attorney’s office to determine the effect the missing evidence might have on court cases.  The District Attorney’s Office will notify the defense bar of any cases that will need to be dismissed due to this breach.
