Star Spangled Salute: A Veteran Survives Covid-19 and Gets His Medals

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 92-year old Navy Veteran Donald Staples. Donald lives in the Maine Veterans’ Home and like several other residents, he contracted Covid-19.  After 2 months in isolation wearing full protective gear, and losing 38-pounds, Donald was on the road to better health until a fall and broken hip presented a set back.  None of this stopped Donald from arriving at a very important day.  His family arranged to have Donald finally receive the service medals that were long overdue.

His medals include:

  • World War II American Campaign Medal.
  • World War II Asiatic Pacific Medal.
  • World War II Victory Medal.
  • National Defense Service Medal – Korean War.

In his wheel chair, Donald sat at attention and said, “It was an honor just to be allowed to serve.”

Feel better soon Donald and thank you for your service.
