City Council upholds denial of permit for Wichita car show

In a split vote, Wichita city council members voted to stay with the denial of a permit for an annual charity car show downtown.

Organizer Joshua Blick appealed a decision from the city to deny the permit.   He said he had created a plan to ensure health and safety of people attending the event, which was scheduled for July 11th.    This would be the 26th year for the Automobilia Moonlight Charity Car Show along Douglas Avenue, from St. Francis to Hydraulic.

The event was expected to draw thousands of people, and mayor Brandon Whipple said even under the state’s reopening plan this event would not be allowed.  He said there would be a risk with the car show because of the coronavirus pandemic.    Council members Brandon Johnson, Becky Tuttle and Cindy Claycomb expressed similar concerns.  Council members Jeff Blubaugh, James Clendenin and Bryan Frye voted against a motion to uphold the denial.    Clendenin said he felt with the city’s ordinance requiring the wearing of masks, he felt the public can be safe attending the event.
