The Newton City Commission has decided to look at a strong recommendation for the wearing of masks in the community to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
At a special meeting, commissioners heard from residents and then decided not to go with a mandate. They have asked staff to bring back a resolution for their July 14th meeting that will recommend masks in public spaces.
The recommendation covers the following situations:
- Inside any indoor public space where distancing of six feet between individuals is not possible at all times.
- In line and waiting to enter an indoor public space.
- Obtaining health-care services.
- Waiting for or riding on public transportation or while in a taxi or ride-sharing vehicle.
- While outdoors in public spaces and unable to maintain a six-foot distance between individuals.
The resolution would allow churches and schools to make their own decisions about the wearing of masks.
