Wichita man charged in son’s drowning death

A Wichita man has been charged in the drowning death of his two-year-old son at a neighborhood swimming pool.

44-year-old William Kabutu appeared in court on a charge of first degree felony murder, with an alternative charge of second degree felony murder.  The alternative cases can be presented if there are two or more theories on how the death occurred.  Each charge can be presented to a jury and a defendant could be convicted of more than one of the alternative charges, but he can only be sentenced for one count, which would be the most severe offense.

Kabutu is also charged with two counts of aggravated child endangerment.   Another court hearing has been scheduled for July 23rd and bond was set at $150,000.

Police arrested Kabutu after his son drowned the night of July 7th at a pool in the 1900 block of East 54th Street South.   Investigators said Kabutu went to the pool with the two-year-old boy and his four-year-old brother, and he allowed them to bypass a fence to get into the pool area.
