The city of Wichita, the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center and the United Way of the Plains have announced a pilot program that will allow veterans to ride free on the city’s bus system.

The program is called Veterans Ride Free, and it will be funded for two years.   The program will allow veterans with appropriate identification to ride any bus free of charge across the entire Wichita Transit system.

Wichita mayor Brandon Whipple said after two years, data can be collected on ridership and decisions can be made on continuing and improving the program.   The interim director of the Dole VA Medical Center, Dr. Dana Foley, said the program will help veterans who need transportation to get to the locations and services they need.
