Wind Surge owner dies of COVID-19 complications

The majority owner of Wichita’s Triple-A baseball team has died of complications related to COVID-19.

The Wichita Wind Surge issued a statement Wednesday saying that Lou Schwechheimer had passed away.   He was the driving force behind the return of affiliated baseball to Wichita and the construction of the new Riverfront Stadium.

Jared Forma, general manager of the team, said in a press release that “Lou was truly one of a kind, someone who never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, which included an extended baseball family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lou’s wife and daughter at this difficult time.”

Forma said the team will continue to work to fulfill Schwechheimer’s vision for Wichita.
