Board rules that Sedgwick County commission candidate can stay on the ballot

An objections board has ruled that a Democratic candidate for a Sedgwick County commission seat can remain on the ballot for the November general election.

A board chaired by district attorney Marc Bennett held a hearing Monday morning to look at a complaint filed against Sarah Lopez, alleging that she was not a resident of District Two, where she is challenging Republican incumbent Michael O’Donnell.

The board heard from investigators who looked into the complaint, and Bennett said the findings confirmed that Lopez is a resident of the district.  He issued a finding stating that Lopez can remain on the ballot.

Republican committeeman and former Kansas House member John Whitmer filed the complaint.  The board ruled that Whitmer will have to pay a fee of $175 to the county election office to cover the costs of the investigation.
