Committee to look at guidelines for decision on fall sports at Wichita schools

The Wichita school board agreed Monday night to have a new COVID-19 advisory committee review guidelines for schools and make a report so the board can decide next week whether to allow fall sports activities.

The board decided last week to have remote learning for middle school and high school students for the first nine weeks of school, and that meant there would be no outside activities or fall sports.   The decision touched off protests by athletes, coaches, and parents leading up to the board meeting Monday.

After some discussion, the board set up an advisory committee and agreed to have that committee look at “gating criteria” to help determine if fall sports would be allowed.  The board vote was 6-1 with board president Sheril Logan voting no.

The board expects to make a decision next Monday.
