Star Spangled Salute: A World War II Veteran Keeps His Promise

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors World War II Veteran Marvin Strombo. During the war, Marvin came upon a Japanese soldier named Sadao Yasue who was clinging to life and a Japanese flag covered in the 180 signatures of friends and family, known as a Yosegaki Hinomaru.  Touched by the man’s devotion to his country Marvin made a promise as Sadao passed away, that he would one day return the flag to his family. Recently, Marvin made the trip across the Pacific one more time, this time to keep that 73-year old promise, and returned the flag to Sadao’s brother, Tatsuya, who said the flag would be something the family treasures.  Thank you Marvin for keeping that promise and thank you Marvin AND Sadao for your service.
