Wichita schools extend free meal program through December

The Wichita school district said Friday its students will be eligible to receive free meals through December, thanks to an expansion of a USDA program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is continuing its Summer Food Service program, and all children ages 1 through 18 will get free meals, whether eating onsite or through the MySchool Remote distribution program.   This includes families who normally pay the full rate or the reduced rate.   Families will not be charged for any school meals they have received for the first week of school.

The meal distribution for students in MySchool Remote online learning will be changing.   Families will no longer have to pre-order meals, but they will need to prove that they have children enrolled in the MySchool Remote program.   They will get a verification card when they pick up meals for the first time, and they will have to show that card to staff when they return each week for the rest of the semester.

Families can pick up five breakfasts and five lunches on Thursdays between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. at twelve locations.  More information is available at www.usd259.org
