FBI Warns Of New Phone Scam

The FBI is warning of a new phone scam involving individuals claiming to be special agents for the Bureau while using a spoof FBI phone number.

These individuals tell victims their identities have been stolen and used to buy stocks, property, or to open bank accounts in the victim’s name. They then ask the potential victim to wire their savings to them for “safekeeping.”

This comes after a man in St. Louis was scammed out of $100,000.

Since “spoofed” numbers belong to a legitimate agency or business, the FBI recommends that anyone who may have received a suspicious call like this contact the actual organization to verify.

They also said that if you believe you have been a victim of such a scam to contact your bank immediately to cancel the wire transfer, then file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Compliance Center.
