Kansas continues to see increase in coronavirus cases

The state of Kansas was reporting over 5,900 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, pushing the state’s total past the 100,000 mark.

The state reports 103,553 cases in all 105 counties.   There have been 1,181 deaths, an increase of 15 from the last report on Friday.

Sedgwick County is reporting a total of 15,104 cases for the pandemic, an increase of 282 from Sunday.  The county’s death toll remains at 137.    There have been 155,434 people tested, an increase of 786.    The positive testing rate has gone up to 21.6 percent.

The Sedgwick County Health Department reports nearly 180 patients are being treated at Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.  The two hospitals have been at or near capacity with intensive care beds, and they have been following contingency plans to provide space for patients but there are concerns about staffing needs.   The county continues to urge people to wear a mask in public, wash their hands frequently and follow social distancing practices.

Scott County, in western Kansas, had to send a patient out of state because Kansas hospitals were out of ICU space at the time.   Scott County has reported 44 active cases and 14 tests waiting for results.
