Plans announced for community center in northwest Wichita

Wichita officials have announced plans to create a new Evergreen Community Center, combining services of several community agencies and the Evergreen Branch Library.  The project is intended to create a multicultural, multigenerational resource center for the city’s historic North End neighborhood.

Vice-mayor Cindy Claycomb said the new community center will provide residents with a variety of learning opportunities along with access to essential city services.

The Evergreen Branch Library at 2601 North Arkansas will be temporarily closed for renovations starting Monday, November 30th.  A temporary library will be established at the Evergreen Recreation Center at 2700 North Woodland.   Library spokesman Sean Jones said the temporary library will begin providing services on Monday, December 21st.  It will be open 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday, 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays and 2 to 5 p.m. on Fridays.    The temporary library will allow people to return materials or borrow items placed on hold for transfer from other libraries, and there will be a small collection for browsing.     Public computing services will be available from the Evergreen Neighborhood Resource Center at 2700 North Woodland.

The Evergreen Community Center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2021.  The project will cost $1.65 million and it is being funded by proceeds from the library’s capital improvement program and from the city’s sale of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
