Star Spangled Salute: A Female Army Veteran Breaks Barriers

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Army Veteran Dorothy Williams-Jeffries.  When Dorothy joined the Army in 1973, women found themselves in roles such as telephone operators, X-ray techs and teachers.  Not Dorothy, she would go on to break down barriers.  Dorothy entered the Army as a member of the Women’s Army Corps, or WACs, at Fort Bragg and quickly made a name for herself. Dorothy was in WAC detachment and on day one, the first sergeant walked in, in front of 476 men and says, “‘I’m introducing you to your first female member of 58th MP company.” That unit would go on to be part of what is now the 16th Military Police Brigade at Fort Bragg.  Dorothy would also go on to become the first female member at the Non-Commissioned Officers Course, known as B-NOC.  After her service, she once again defied the odds after an accident when she was told she would never walk again, once again, she proved them wrong and walked with crutches across the stage when she collected her Masters Degree.  Thank you for your example Dorothy and THANK YOU for your service Dorothy.
