Suspect dead in confrontation with police after east Wichita robbery

Police chased a suspect after a robbery at an east Wichita credit union Monday afternoon, and the suspect was killed when shots were fired.

The robbery was reported around 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Golden Plains Credit Union at Kellogg and Webb Road, and as the suspect got away with some cash, police chased him to the intersection of 13th and Webb Road.   Police captain Wendell Nicholson said the suspect was driving a stolen truck, and it collided with two citizens’ vehicles and two police cars.  Shots were fired and an EMS crew determined the suspect was dead at the scene.    There were minor injuries to the two citizens whose vehicles were hit, but there was no word of any injuries to officers.

Police blocked off the intersection and urged motorists to avoid the area.   Webb Road has been closed from 13th Street south to Central.  Traffic was also being blocked eastbound on 13th from Rock Road.

The FBI and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are working with Wichita police on the investigation.
