A swearing-in ceremony was held Sunday for a new Sedgwick County commissioner and another commissioner who is beginning a new term in office.

The ceremony from the courthouse was streamed online for the swearing-in of new District 2 Commissioner Sarah Lopez and District 3 Commissioner David Dennis.

Dennis took the oath of office first and expressed thanks to his wife, Janet, and his family, friends and supporters.   He said he’s honored to have the opportunity to serve for the next four years.    Dennis, a Republican,  said the past year has been difficult, but the Commission and county staff have kept the needs of the citizens at the forefront.  He said the next year looks much brighter than 2020 and “We still have much to do, but we will get through this together.”

Democrat Sarah Lopez was sworn in to begin serving District 2, and she said she’s excited to get to work.  She said she wants to make sure the county has access to quality physical and mental health care.   She also wants to help the south part of the county attract new and diverse businesses that will grow the economy and bring well-paying jobs.  She said it’s time that hard-working families from south Wichita, Haysville and Clearwater have a voice on the County Commission.
