Sedgwick County to focus on older residents for Phase 2 coronavirus vaccines

Sedgwick County Commissioners were told Tuesday that the county should receive its first shipment of vaccines later this week for Phase 2 of the statewide COVID-19 vaccination plan.

Phase 2 is for people 65 and older, along with high-contact critical workers, such as law enforcement, but Deputy County Manager Tim Kaufman said that group won’t be the first to get the vaccine.  He said the first shipment will be too small to begin vaccinating that population, so the first doses under Phase 2 will go to health care workers who were not vaccinated under Phase 1, then it will go to people 90 and older.

Kaufman said it was recommended by the county’s Local Health Officer, Dr. Garold Minns, that Phase 2 should start with people who are most likely to be negatively impacted and those who are most likely to die from the virus.   That will involve people 90 and older.

The county will begin to schedule appointments as shipments of the vaccine arrive.  Kaufman said the initial vaccinations will be provided at INTRUST Bank Arena and there will be other locations as more shipments arrive.

Kaufman said people under age 90 won’t be able to make appointments right away, so they should continue to watch local media and the county’s web site for information on when to sign up.
