Star Spangled Salute: A Wichita Native Helping Keep The Oceans Secure

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Airman Joshua Dick from Wichita and Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Jared Shirley, from Jonesborough, Ark..  The two are just an example of the many that play a part in safety and stability of the world’s oceans.  Part of their duties include performing maintenance on a Mark 38 gun aboard USS America (LHA 6). America, part of the America Amphibious Ready Group, along with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility to enhance interoperability with allies and partners, serving as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Pacific region. With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy.  THANK YOU Joshua and Jared for your service.
