A 17 year old girl has died following an apartment fire in west Wichita that broke out early Friday afternoon.
The fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of West Newell. Crews reported smoke coming from a duplex when they arrived.
The unidentified girl was reportedly studying in her room when she notified her grandmother that she saw smoke. The girl then became trapped in a back bedroom in the apartment. Firefighters were able to locate her and pull her out, but she died later at a hospital due to smoke inhalation.
Traffic was blocked in the area. No other injuries were reported and there was no immediate word on a cause of the fire, which was confined to the kitchen.
