Kansas Cold Weather Rule ending Wednesday

The Kansas Cold Weather Rule end on Wednesday, March 31.

If you are behind on gas or electricity payments, you could have service shut off unless you set up a payment plan with your utility provider. Under the state plan, the customer must make an initial payment of 1/12 of the overdue amount, 1/12 of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees if any, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the regular monthly bill.

Because of COVID, there is a statewide order in place requiring utility companies to offer payment plans until the end of the pandemic. Customers who have previously broken two payment agreements may not qualify though, and they’re urged to make a new plan before the Cold Weather Rule expires.

To set up a payment plan, you will need to contact your utility provider. Details on utility assistance programs can be found below.
