The Kansas African American Museum hosted an event Wednesday to install an historical marker at the birthplace of Oscar-winning actress Hattie McDaniel.

The marker was installed at 925 North Wichita in an event attended by local government and community leaders.   It represents the life and career of McDaniel (1893-1952), who was born in Wichita and made history as the first African-American to win an Academy Award.   She was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1939 film, “Gone With the Wind.”

Museum Executive Director Denise Sherman said McDaniel was one of the most amazing women of the 20th Century.   She said the marker will recognize her birthplace and share her story.
