Kansas Man Indicted for Tampering with a Public Water System

According to a press release issued by Acting U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard, a Kansas man has been indicted for tampering with a public water system.

22 year old Wyatt Travnichek of Ellsworth County, Kansas is charged with tampering with a public water system and reckless damage to a protected computer during unauthorized access.

It is alleged that on or around March 27th, 2019, Travnichek accessed the Ellsworth County Rural Water District’s protected computer system without authorized access. He then shut down the various processes that affected cleaning and disinfecting procedures with the intent to cause harm.

Both federal charges carry a fine of up to $250,000 each, and between 5 to 20 years in federal prison.

The investigation was conducted by the KBI, FBI, and the EPA.
