Wichita will again host TBT regional basketball event

Wichita has again been chosen as a host site for regional games in an annual summer basketball tournament.

The Basketball Tournament, or TBT, is a 64-team $1 million winner-take-all tournament that is televised live on ESPN.    Wichita was a regional site for the tournament in 2019, and it has been chosen as one of the regional sites for this year’s event.

Wichita State University’s alumni team, the AfterShocks, will be among the 16 teams in the Wichita Regional taking place at Charles Koch Arena July 16th through the 20th.  First round games will be played on Friday, July 16th and Saturday the 17th, with second round games on Sunday the 18th.   Two third-round games will be played on Tuesday, July 20th.

Former Shocker players Conner Frankamp, Rashard Kelly, Markis McDuffie, and Samaje Haynes-Jones have committed to the roster for the AfterShocks for this year’s tournament.   More players will be announced later.

TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar said in a press release that the last time the AfterShocks played a round one game in TBT, it shattered attendance records.   He said the tournament is excited to partner with Wichita State and return to Koch Arena this summer.

Josh Howell, sports sales manager for Visit Wichita, said the community showed great excitement and support for the tournament in 2019.

Wichita was scheduled to host a regional event in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the tournament to consolidate into a 24-team event in Columbus, Ohio.
