KS Attorney General stepping in regarding cold snap gas prices

Kansas Attorney General, Derek Schmidt, is working to step in on behalf of customers as gas companies look to recover costs from February’s cold snap.

Schmidt’s office filed documents with the Kansas Corporation Commission, as Black Hills, Kansas Gas, and Atmos seek to collect more money from customers to make up for a spike in natural gas prices as winter weather brought record cold temperatures to the state.

“These dramatic price spikes have placed a great burden on many consumers as well as on many Kansas taxpayers,” Schmidt said. “Our investigation into potential illegal acts is separate from the regulatory actions of the Kansas Corporation Commission, and by intervening in the KCC cases we can help ensure the state’s overall response remains coordinated and the interests of consumers, ratepayers and taxpayers are fully represented at every stage of the various proceedings and investigations.”

Because of the dramatic spike in gas prices, Schmidt’s office has been looking into potential profiteering. An investigation into the price hike is ongoing.
