Two Sedgwick County detention deputies had injuries to their hands after struggling with an armed inmate.

Sheriff’s officials report two corporals and a deputy were escorting a 56-year-old man to his cell Wednesday night, when it he pulled out a metal shank and started swinging. This happened around 10:20 p.m.

There was a struggle between the inmate and deputies as they tried to maintain control of the shank. Once the inmate was under control, he was checked out by medical staff and taken to a hospital for treatment. This inmate has since been returned to the jail and is facing three new counts of Attempted First-degree Murder.

This inmate has been in custody since March 3 of this year. He was originally booked for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Battery and Cruelty to Animals.
