U.S. Task Force Lowers Age for Diabetes Screening

As diabetes prevalence in the United States surges among children as well as adults, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has lowered its recommended screening age for overweight adults from 40 to 35.

Previous guidelines issued in 2015 recommended this measure for overweight adults aged 40 to 70 years. The new recommendation comes as data suggests that incidence of diabetes increases at age 35 compared with younger ages; at-risk individuals should be screened every three years from sges 35 to 70.

According to the CDC, an estimated 84 million American adults aged 18 and older of prediabetes, which is approximately 1 out of 3. 90% of them don’t even know they have it.

In the state of Kansas, almost 11% of adults aged 18 or older have diabetes, according to data compiled in 2019.
